How Do I Coach Students?

As I've mentioned before, Student Coaching is a combination of consulting/tutoring, where I have all of the right answers, and pure coaching, where the student has all of the answers and I have all of the right questions.

The initial interview tends to last less than 30 minutes, and it is designed to determine how well we would work together.  For best results, a good match between student and coach is important.  I don't want to work with those students I can't help any more than they should want to work with a coach who can't help them.  In other words, I will not work with a student whom I can't help achieve spectacular results.  It would be a waste of time for both of us.

The next step is the intake session where I get to know the student better through an in-depth interview and intake questionnaire.  The student also completes the personality assessment, MAPP, which stands for Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential.  This tool seeks to "guide, motivate and empower people to achieve their greatest educational and career potential."  After answering the questions in the MAPP, the student receives a personalized report which we use to further refine the style of coaching that works best for that student.

The standard coaching package (the other packages are listed below) consists of three half-hour sessions per month which take place once per week.  Each of these sessions is one-to-one with the coach.  The last week consists of a teleseminar which will include others and last one hour.  The teleseminars are phone-based classes on issues such as time-management, goal-setting, or networking.  These live teleseminars are recorded and made available for the students to listen to again at a later time.

In addition to the scheduled sessions, the students have phone, e-mail, and internet chat access (when the coach is online) to the coach for quick coaching sessions.  These can be used if the student needs a quick pep talk before an exam or just wants to share a success.

At the end of each month, I complete a feedback form for each student which is sent to the student and the individual paying the fees (where appropriate).  This feedback form includes a summary of the coaching process for the month, what goals have been established, and progress on those goals.

The available coaching packages are listed below:
