About Me
My name is John McCarthy, Ph.D. I live in Slingerlands, New York with
my beautiful wife, three awesome children, and two slightly odd cats.
My Ph.D. is from the University at Albany, State University of New
York (yes, that mouthful is the official moniker) in the area of Social-Personality psychology. If you're not
familiar with this specialty, I usually refer to it as the psychology of
normal people in normal situations.
The Social part of it deals with how the external environment,
everything outside of the person, affects behavior. The
Personality part deals with how the individual creates patterns of
behavior across situations.
That really covers all of the bases doesn't it?
What am I not? I am not a therapist. Call me selfish, but
I only want to work with people who want to be extraordinary, not just
normal. Working with therapy issues is not what I'm good at, so I
leave it to people who are meant to work on these issues.
Why did I want to become a student coach?
Because that's who I am. I help other people create the kind of lives that
people write biographies about. Their lives are extraordinary
because they become who they are meant to be. I work with college students because
they are at a point in their lives where my participation can give them
a huge head-start over where they would have been at graduation. I can cut up to a decade or more off their learning
curve. That's what drives me.
What else qualifies me to be a student coach, and why am I starting
to sound like Donald Rumsfeld?
I'm also an educational technology expert for the New York State
Assembly as well as a voracious consumer of personal and professional
development literature. I created a professional development
newsletter at the Assembly, and I've taught at a diverse set of
universities and colleges. If that's not enough to show I'm
serious, give me a call and I'll really get started.
So, that's a little about me. I hope you enjoy my site, and
that we can work together soon.
